Artist’s Statement:
Energy charged colors captivate the viewer at first glance. Her watercolors and collages have no soft peddle. Not only do the colors sing across the paper, but the textures formed play against these flowing forms to create lively action.
Wells does not limit her subject matter; in portraits or figure studies of mysterious quality, a new plane of reality is tested. The palette remains strong and bold; however, the shapes and flowing color suggest harmony and pleasure.
Emotion, movement, action. Put these descriptive words together with bright vivid watercolor and you have the concept of where Wells is taking her art. Add a passion for color and texture and you have described the artistic intentions of Cookie Wells.
To an artist, all of life is a moving canvas waiting to be frozen in a moment on paper or canvas. Hopefully, it will capture a moment in time, a feeling, a memory, or emotion. How I treat the process of putting it on paper is my creative process.
I worked for many years in the commercial graphic world. In the 1980’s, I chose to paint in watercolor for its loose and flowing qualities and the freedom it gave me. I fell in love with the medium and never turned back. I find it always challenging and exciting.
My passion for painting the figure is because I find that you can capture so much beauty and emotions. Always seeking ways of using color and texture, sometimes takes me in different directions. In the words of Henri Matisse, “Color was not given to us to imitate nature. It was given to us to express our own emotions.” I love that statement and find it so true.
